MySQL is hands down the most popular open source database engine available, and being the ideal application for handling small to medium sized databases at negligible cost, it’s not hard to see why. While MySQL has suffered from a few design oversights in the past, this latest version seems to correct these and further boosts the application’s impressive range of features. The new “multi-tier” approach now supports views and functions, a past omission that would have caused some raised eyebrows no doubt. With the inclusion of user defined procedures, as well as retaining all the old features that made it so popular in the first place, MySQL is as competitive as ever. Installation is very simple, and whether you are installing from scratch or updating the utility, the entire process is quick and painless. Operating MySQL has always been a straightforward, uncomplicated business, and nothing has changed, although, having said that, the command line does have its limitations and it is recommended that you download a 3rd party GUI to overcome this issue. MySQL has always been a to quality freeware database application, and the new additions to the features list only help to add more strength to this position.
