OpenOffice.org is one of the most successful, widely used open source applications available at the moment, and itÂ’s easy to see why. Users the world over, not prepared to pay the hefty price tag of MicrosoftÂ’s commercial alternative, have turned to OpenOffice.org and in it have discovered a very adequate replacement indeed. The download comes with several office applications, such as Writer, Calc, Impress and Base, which bear a striking resemblance to MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access respectively, including many of the same features and functions. So similar is the design and layout of these applications from their commercial counterparts that users will have no trouble operating them an should feel right at home. While there is the odd hiccup to be had with OpenOfice.org, such as random crashes and the odd file recognition issue, these occurrences are few and far between and certainly do nothing to detract from the overall usefulness of the application. Anyone in search of an excellent free office suite should certainly check out OpenOffice.org. It is a big download at 64MB, but definitely well worth it.
